Ashley will appreciate that...
Hey Ash, you said earlier in this thread you were putting in a 6-230. How are you going to mount it? I am pretty much doing the same thing. I would love to see some pics of your mounts if you have them.
i think Ashley`s truck came from the factory with the 6-230 engine the same as mine.
i can get some pics of the engine mounts with engine still in place .
I would love to seem some pics of what you have.
Yes Cal my Truck was factory fitted with a 6-230 and from what I can see is that they had to cut a small section out of the front cross memberAttachment 223 Dave would be able to take some photos of the engine fitted. Mine is sitting beside the chassis at the moment. I have a spare engine plate bracket if you need.
Thanks for the photo Ash. I like how you boxed it in. I am in the same boat with my engine. Its sitting next to the frame. I need to get my mounts fashioned so I can finish the frame. Once that is done this thing should really start coming together.
What is your 6-230 like Cal ? Is it a goer ? Do you have a lead on where you can get parts for it ?
hi guys. i finally got those engin mount pics.
please note that this is a right hand drive truck.

Thanks Dave for posting the pics. It has definitely given me some insight. They are nothing at all like what I had in mine hehe. I noticed the steering linkage on the right in the pic above or what looks like the steering linkage. I ordered some general purpose mounts but will have to work them out to get everything to work. I will take photos as I go. I am picking up a cherry picker from a friend so I can finally proceed. I havent been doing much on it lately due to the holidays with family here. I should start picking it up again soon though. Again thanks for the picks.
Ash, I havent found and reliable places for super hurricane parts. Mostly just people selling used stuff then I just make it work. It ran great when I picked it up but going with a gm 250 motor which came with the truck. Easier for parts as most people just throw away their 250's here in the States.
Just a couple of Pic's showing what little progress I have made, work doesn't let me get much time. Attachment 245I have got the springs and cross member fitted back onto the Chassis. Got a set of Reamers on good oll eBay which did the job on the new spring buses. Gearbox, Transfer and Over Drive has been overhauled and ready. Attachment 244 Attachment 246
Looks good. Are you going to paint any of your powertrain or leave it as is?
G-day Cal.....It was the plan to paint every thing but the gearbox has missed out. Will make sure the engine and bell housing gets done, any idea what colour the original Tornado 230 engine was ??
You know Ash thats a good question. I have never thought to look that up. I assumed back in the day they didnt color the motors. Let me do a bit of research.
So this was what I was able to find. My engine was orange but I didnt think it was original, however the factory used an orange sealer under black semi gloss. I cant find any traces of black on my engine but since my vehicle had few owners before me I cant imagine the farmer painting the motor orange with all the "agricultural" mods that were done on the vehicle. Apparently Willys did have a policy for the cylinder heads where standard compression engines had a blue head and high compression engines had a black head although this policy was never enforced, ever. I think if you found a blue head out there it would be a unique find if it was original. I am unable to find out what shades of these colors was used. Essentially everything onder the hood should be semi gloss black with the exception of the oil filter which would have been orange and some parts like the radiator might have been olive green due to the parts being universal with the military vehicles. There is very little information out there with anything that I would call definitive on the subject. If you find out anything else please let me know. For myself I just planned on gloss black with chrome. Its easy, cheap and looks good in this guys opinion. Good luck.
I have some photos of the spare engine I am hoping will be OK with some parts from the original if needed, I am pretty keen to have the 230 in there to keep it as stock as possible.Cal I am thinking gloss black would be the conservative way to go, but chevy red would stand out in the newly painted engine bay ???? decisions.Attachment 247Attachment 248Attachment 249 Got the Diffs back sitting in place today, had the diffs re assembled by a ( Street and Race Differential Specialist ) and he gave them a good bill of health.Attachment 250Attachment 251
I still love the look of that engine. What size diff's are you running? I think your engine color should fit with the color of the rest of your vehicle. After seeing your engine, I may switch to a blue that will be on the interior as well as all the trim. What color do you plan for your base or will it be a 1 color car? The only problem with red might be if it sticks out unusually against the colors of the rest of the vehicle. Thats just my opinion. On the other hand if the whole vehicle is red I dont think that would look good either. Good luck and Happy New Year.
Attachment 252Attachment 253 I found these photo's on the net of a resto a guy had done and the Tornado looks a treat under the hood.I am thinking of painting the jeep Blue all over, or with a white roof.
It looks nice simple and clean. I like how he did the fan blades red. I think I would have tried to dress it up more with red accents but I wouldnt have done the engine red. I think light, sky blue, baby blue whatever color you want to call it is pretty classy especially with the white. I think you would be safe with a blue engine as well no matter what the shade. Mine will be a dark charcoal grey with the baby blue accents and off white interior. Its going to look sick at least it will if it comes out like I imagine it in my head. I'm a long ways away from that though.
Ash I found this on the blog. Might give you some insight. Its what I envision your truck looking like in the near future.

i cant be 100% that its original, but mine has remains of black paint on the engine block.
I couldnt find any paint chips or color codes or anything pertaining to engine color. I know you are not sure what color you want but if it were me I would go with the stock color on the engine especially with the color scheme you are choosing. I think it would look nice and you can match the orininal if you or your paint shop does that type of work.
Will go with something like you said a light blue, our helicopter engines come out of the OH shop done in a grey and they always look good and clean. A polished rocker hat and a few high lighted bits should make it pretty neat. We will open up the second engine in a couple of weeks so should know if we have a viable engine option.
Man I can't wait to see how it turns out. After reading your previous posts about Aussie Willys I wondered about mine. The frame is set up for brakes and steering linkage on both sides which is kind of odd for an American vehicle. Got some more things to research.
Mate its an interesting journey doing the jeep, you learn so much about the old rig and some of the people you meet have got stories as well. The old guy who put my Diffs back together whipped out an old photo album of when he was a kid and his Dad had a Willys wagon for the family car. When the engine quit they modified it with a Chrysler slant 6.
Cal if you go back a bit I posted a couple of photos of the data plates and there is an additional one put there by Willys Australia ( Blue in colour ) with the ID and number of the vehicle. I found in some other research I did that there was only about 308 Willys trucks built by Willys Australia with the 6-230 designation.
That bit of info I got.........
According to the CJ3B Page Website your '60 Willys pickup may have been produced by Willys Motors Australia Pty. Ltd. in Brisbane.
Although Willys Jeeps had been assembled and sold in Australia since the end of World War II, Willys Motors of Australia apparently took over from 1958 through 1968 producing a number of Willys/Jeeps locally.
Ashley, your truck appears to be one of the "6-230" cab and chassis models. During the 10 year span between '58 and '68 Willys Motors Australia reportedly produced 366 Willys 6-230 models...which would mean your truck is probably pretty rare.
If you find out more about your truck's history, please let us know. Also, if any readers out there have some input please feel free to use the "Comment" section below.
Ashley...keep us up-to-date on your restoration as well. Thanks!
Wow man I am kind of jealous of your truck. Aussie vehicle with the blue head and everything. You got a real winner there. I though I had remembered reading something in your post before about the vin. Thanks for the reminder. I will let you know what I come up with.
G'day Ash,
You might be interested to know that just up the road from you are a 1965 6-230 Utility Wagon and a 1965 6-230 Willys Pickup being restored simultaneously?
I'll take some time in the next couple of days to read your posts.
Just thought you would like to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE :-)
All the best,
Ben
G-day Ben, you are probably just up the road now as I have had a house move since my last post. This jeep project now lives in Clare. Moving house has meant not much work has been done on the jeep, but there has been some progress with my mechanic friend is steadily working on the engine. Block has gone off for a re bore to 040 oversize rings and pistons.
Regards
Ashley
6-230 Distributor Overhaul completed....Attachment 441 Attachment 442Attachment 443
G'day Ashley,
You really are just down the road now :-)
The Distributor looks good.
Got a couple of questions for you...if you don't mind.
1.Will you be maintaining the position of the existing fuel pump? I ask for a good reason<chuckle>
2. I believe you had work done on your diffs by someone in Adelaide...is that right? If so...can you give me their name and just what they did?
3. I apologise for not getting back to you sooner but I have tried to configure the forum to send me emails when I post, or get a reply. I can't it to work<grrrrr>
Hope the weather is fine in Clare and not too cold?
All the best,
Ben
G-Day Ben...the guy I got to re-assemble my diffs was Boss Automotive Engineering in Lonsdale. Graham on 83870178, I gave him the OH bearing kit and got him to put the diffs back together, he has done a couple of sets as my friend from Wilunga is doing a Truck as well. Few around when you scratch the surface. Not sure what the go with the fuel pump is ?? I have a replacement item to fit back where the old one was, is there an issue ??
We should catch up sometime, be good to see your two vehicles. Cheers Ashley
Left hand steering knuckle and axle assembly got done today, Attachment 464 A bit of progress is good, hoping to get the other side done this week. The engine block is back from the shop, has had an acid bath and re-bore to .040, pistons re-aligned and fitted onto the rods. The engine is an exciting project and I am very much looking forward to seeing that go back together and cranking it back into life.
Looks fantastic. I bet once you get the engine back in it will feel like everything is down hill from there.
It has been a busy time lately and there has been not a lot of progress on my Jeep. My mechanic mate has let me know that he has completed the Engine rebuild and I have to arrange a road trip to northern NSW to pick it up. So there has been progress without me doing much. Looking forward to getting some engine pic's to put up for you to see, cant wait to see it myself.
good to hear that you are slowly getting somewhere with the truck.
its hard to find time to work on them when you have a full time life to keep up with as well.
