An electric fuel pump probably will not help with hard starting problems.

The mechanical fuel pump works very well. You can disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor, crank the engine and verify that you are getting fuel to the carburetor. If not, check fuel filters. You could have a defective mechanical fuel pump.

Make sure you have a good spark at the plugs. Check for ignition problems very closely.
