Hi Everybody,
I have just rebuilt my carter 539S model carburator on my MB, only to find that I still have the same problem. That is the only way my jeep will start is to have the choke almost all the way on.When I push the choke part of the way in ... it stalls ! Where did I go wrong ?.Can anybody help out with a suggestion ?..thanks kindly.

I don't know anything specific about that carb but it sounds like you might be getting too much air (or not enough fuel). The engine should be running rich when choked. Rich enough to load up and die when it warms up. Have you checked for air entering the intake manifold through somewhere besides the carburetor throat? I'm looking at the same problem and, if I ever get the time to do it, I intend to check my intake manifold by spraying carb cleaner around it with the engine running. Any change in engine operation will let me know if I have an air leak. If I don't find any leaks then I will look at adjusting the mixture screw(s) and/or the float. Mine may need the carb done again because I let it sit too long without running it.
good luck,
Jeff

Usually when you have to use the choke [after its warmed up] it means the engine is not getting enough fuel, did you check the sediment bulb on top of the fuel pump?

Hi Jeff,
Many thanks for your reply. My thought is not enough fuel. When I poured fuel direct into the carby it started straight away. I used just a small amount of choke but once I eased the choke off it stalled and would not re-start.That's a good tip about air entering the intake manifold. I'll find the fault sooner or later. It all came about when I decided to take my jeep for a run around the street and found that when I gave it acceleration under pressure it stalled. On re-starting,fine until pressure was re-applied.It seemed if the fuel was not filling up in the bowel properly. In the yard on idle, it purred liked a kitten.I had cleaned the carby out previously as the jeep had sat in a garage for 18 years !.I'll keep trying and let you know when I find out what it is..Thanks again for your advice....Brian.

Hi Butch,
I had to use the choke before it was warmed up just to get it to start.Once I touched the choke it will stall.I've checked the fuel pump, it's working fine.Fuel is pumping through to the carby.I removed the air horn over the carby, pumped the accelerator rod but cannot see leaking into the carby. My feeling is that there is not enough fuel in the carby tank.I checked the float level three times and it's correct. It's one of those mysteries that will turn out to be such a simple thing. Thanks for the suggestions.I'll keep you posted.... Regards....Brian.

Something is not right inside that carb, could be something simple like the accelerator pump, which squirts the fuel every time you push on the gas pedal....My 53 is very sensitive to the choke also, if I choke too much , then it floods ,and then I might as well go for a coffee and try later.

Hi Butch,
Well, it's got me beat.I just rebuilt it again and changed the float level from 3/8ths to 1/2 inch. Not much difference really but, it started first go with the choke on.I let it warm a little started to ease the choke off and .... it stalled !.I don't know why.Other then it must somehow cut off the fuel supply...has anyone got any further thoughts on this ?....... thanks heaps.
Brian.

May be too much wear on the throttle shaft or body. This can let in too much air causing a lean condition at idle.

Hi All,
I finally found out that my carburattor needs a full adjustment to the plunger, needle and seat & float level. Does anybody know where I can purchase a Carter carby tool kit ?. There are no carburattor specialist here or close by, any more that re-build them. They have all retired !!!. Thanks to everybody who responded to my problem..... Brian.
