g`day fellow Willys fans.

i`m Dave and live on the central coast of Queensland, Australia.
i have a `62? willys truck with the 6-230 OHC engine that i am about to start a complete strip and rebuild on. i picked it up at a swap meet 18 months ago but had to finish building my shed first so i have somewhere to work. the truck is in pretty good condition for its age and mostly complete. about the only thing missing is the winscreen. the engine is suposed to have been rebuilt recently for the previous owner before he passed away. it runs ok and i have driven it around my yard a few times but no brakes limits me a bit.

when i was a kid we had one simillar to this only a 6-226. i have always thought they are the coolest looking old 4x4.

Great find! The body looks like it's in really good condition... We just picked up a 51' truck last week and the body is going to need some work... Good luck on the new project and keep us updated on your progress!

Nice! I really envy all of you that live in relatively rust-free climates. Not that I'd like to live in them; to hot for me....but the winters and road salt up here absolutely destroy stuff.

P.S. Your steering wheel is on the wrong side.:p;)

Dave,
What have you got planned for it? Are you going to restore it back to original or restore it for a daily driver?

dave351cid

plans are to restore it back to near original . minor safety changes like dual circuit brakes, seat belts, maybe a better seat from a later model Ford Falcon ute ( i have seen a couple of willys with these seats and they fit nicely. still deciding on the colour but will probably stay with the dark green (seems to have been the most popular colour over here).
the body is in quite good condition with very little rust that i have found and no crash damage. only one bullet hole in the bonnet.
i would like to build a new tray for it using the old one to copy.

it will just be another weekend toy for me.

yep its in pretty good shape for its age. must have been a barn find i would say. sadly i dont know much of its history before the previous owner bought it.

Hi Dave,
If you are going to work on the brakes, I'd suggest upgrading to the 11"x2" Wagoneer style; well, unless you want to go all out and convert it to disc. The Wagoneer brakes offer quite a bit more power and make it so you don't have to remove the hub on the rear to mess with them. Oh, and they're self adjusting too.

dave351cid

i thought about disc , but decided to keep it close to oroginal. will make getting it regoed a lot easier as well.
i have just bought a complete brake overhaul kit plus a dual reservoir master cylinder from Kaiser Willys Auto Supply .
hopefully once i put all new parts into it i shouldnt need to do too much more work on the brakes when its on the road. i doubt that i will be working it too hard. if i decide to do any hard core 4x4ing i would buy something thats a bit more common and easier to get parts for.

i will need to get most of my parts from the states as there is not much willys gear available here anymore.

dave351cid

i have a couple of other vehicals to keep me busy as well as the willys.

this is my daily driver. it is a 2003 built Ford Falcon BA ute. 4 litre straight six engine that runs LPG from the factory. i bought this brand new and plan to keep it for several more years. it has just clocked 200 000km.

and this is my other toy. it is a 1975 Ford XB Fairmont sedan with a 400hp efi 351 cleveland and toplaoder gearbox. i have owned this car for almost 25 years. no plans to ever sell it.

If you ever need to mess with the brakes again, check to see if the shoes are availlable for a 1972 (I think) Wagoneer. That's another plus for the 11"x2" brakes, I buy my brake shoes at the local auto parts stores. Of course, I don't know if you had many Wagoneers in Oz land either. It's getting hard enough to find certain things here in the states. I can still get oil filters at the local store as well, maybe because they were also used on Massey tractors, but I went looking for a shim pack for the kingpins on a dana front end and NOTHING. That same front end was used up into the 70's and NOTHING. Unbelievable! Luckily, I actually had to take out shim instead of add it or I'd be making my own out of shim stock.....something else that auto parts stores have stopped carrying. You know; auto parts stores these days may well as be jiffy lubes because all they ever have in stock is oil and fluids.

P.S. Mad max and Road Warrior are two of my favorite movies......Beyond Thunderdome, not so much. ;)

thanks. i guess it would be closer to the Ranchero. based on the Falcon sedan which is about the same size as the mustang i think.

we have had WRXs here for a long time but most of our skylines are second hand imports from japan. i think you can buy them new from nissan here now , if you have enough $$$. not many new ones around.

The engine is actually a Continental Red Seal and was used by Massey, Willys (super hurricane), Kaiser (supersonic), Checker cabs and various implements like air compressors and forklifts.

They're making Mad Max 4 !!!!???? Sweet! Now I've got another one to look forward to along with "The Hobbit" and maybe, someday, a Halo movie.

I think I liked "Road Warrior" best but it's close with the first one for sure.

thanks for that list. i will copy it and give it to him next time i see him. he dosn`t use the computer much.
the truck that he has is actually the same one that dad and my uncle had on the farm when i was a kid. i have moved about 1300km from my old home town so dont see him that often.

thanks Ashley.

been slowly getting a bit done to the willys. well pulling it apart atleast. i now have the chassis pretty much striped, just have to lift the engine and gear box out. the cab is hanging from the shed roof at the moment.

i must get my finger out and do a build thread on here . have been taking lots of photos as i go.

finding time to get stuck into it is a problem and i have had to get tools & equipment to do things too. just waiting for a chance to get to town and buy a engine lifter now. thats one of the joys of living in the bush and being on-call for work most of the time i guess. i have also just bought another project - an XD Falcon that has been stored in a shed for 15 years. its nothing to special, but has a very solid body and shouldn`t take too much to get regoed.

G'day Dave,
Leave the brakes original. You can get all the parts you need from the top brake suppliers right in SA. They are Power Brakes. Been in business for over 50 years. What they don't know about Jeep brakes (and brakes in general) hasn't been written
I have them reline my slave cylinders and the Master Cylinder with Stainless Steel sleeves, ...then use synthetic brake fluid so that it doesn't collect moisture and I can then change it at lengthy periods instead of yearly.
Once you've got then overhauled just put a VH44 booster on it and you'll be amazed!
The VH44 (as you would know) is the most commonly used booster. It can be rebuilt by the same blokes, if you have an old one.
They were used on lots of cars. Valiants. Early Fords, Holdens even Mini's. It's the favourite "go to" for blokes who want to "hide" the fact that they have a Power Booster on an original vehicle.
Indeed, they are so small you could fit it under the dash of the 6-230. No one would know it was there!!
All the best,
Ben

g`day Ben.

thanks for the contact. i will keep them in mind.
i have already bought a brake rebuild kit from Kaiserwillys that included all the new shoes, 4 new drums, wheel cylinders and springs for the shoes as well as a twin circute master cylinder .thanks to our booming $$ i dont think i could have recoed my original parts for the price.
i have been keeping my eye out for a remote booster to put on it and know an old brake specialist who i will get to make all new hose ware when the time comes.

G'day mate,
You might consider using synthetic brake fluid to negate the chances of water absorption.
If the pipe bending and flaring is at "mates rates' then fine...but if it's not, it's very easy to make your own.
I bend mine with springs and pipe benders (hand held). The only additional tool you need is a double flaring tool.

All the best,
Ben
