Replacing the donuts (or hockey pucks up here in the frozen north) won't hurt. Even if they're still there, they're hard and brittle. On the '48 2WD, at least one was just gone - it dropped that corner about an inch and a half and made a real nice squeak point.

Oh, by the way (don't you love OBTW statements?). There are springs that go on the bolts that mount the rubber shock/vibration dampers. I don't know if they are used on all the places on the SW, but my cab on the '48 does float a bit on the frame.

Oops..

On the '48 2WD truck, there were springs along with the bumpers and bolts to allow the cab to bounce a little bit. They might not have been used on the later vehicles.

Well, you made me think. I got under the truck today and looked at how the cab sits on the frame. On the front, the cab is mounted with a series of rubber pads and donuts, and sure enough, the two rear mounting brackets have big springs on the bottom to let the rear of the cab float a bit on the rubber spacers and donuts.
'"tis true - and that's what came off when we took it apart.
