I am the proud owner of a 1960 Willys Truck that was built in Australia by Willys Australia. For its age this truck is in exceptional condition, fitted with an overdrive and has very little rust.104 Picked up my project from Windsor in New South Wales and towed it back to my property in South Australia.105 It is fitted with an overhead cam Tornado 230 engine which turns over freely on the starter, I did think about trying to get it running but there was no spark and the brakes are completely shot so I didn't bother messing with it. I decided we would just start pulling it down,106 progress has been relatively painless with about 95% of the bolts all coming undone, we are ready to lift the cab off now just have to unbolt the steering box and feed out through the floor. I will post progress reports on this Trucks journey to the finish line and rolls out with a new lease of life.

g`day Ashley.

that looks like the one that was on evil bay a few times ?. hope you got it for a fair price. it looks to be in pretty good shape for an old beast.
good to see another aussie on here and with the same truck as mine. i havent done a lot with mine yet but have been buying some new parts ready to go. hopefully we will be able to share finds and help each other solve a few puzzles along the way.

Hi Dave, Yes I went and visited that fella last time he didn't sell it and we did a deal. Worth every cent I reckon, great piece of history and they are as scarce as hens teeth. I will get a lot of satisfaction returning it to its former glory. You look to have a decent unit yourself. I reckon we may be able to trade information along the ways on this job.

Ashley

i wonder how much apart the trucks were built.
from what i have read the 6-230 came out in mid `62, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Tornado_engine . and there was only 366 of the 6-230 cab/chassis built in australia http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/world/AustraliaHistory.html .

i will get the numbers off mine, they may have followed each other down the assembly line.

Here are the data plates off my ute,107108 from my research the 230 was introduced in 1962 in the US but as mine is a 1960 year build and has a 230 I assumed that the Australian built truck got the engine early.

thanks for the pics... you`ve shown me yours so now i better show you mine.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/dave351cid/62%20willys%206%20230%20truck/P8220048.jpg

by the australian plate it looks like they were 82 trucks apart. mine being the earlier one.
by the serial numbers there is 843 difference so i imagine that would be 843 willys vehicals total ( trucks, jeeps, wagons, etc) with 82 trucks being part of the mix.

my speedo is showing 74923 miles , hard to tell if its the first time round.

i am curious to know how you have identified yours as a `60 model ? or are you just guessing. ? we had a `60 model on the farm when i was a kid that the nieghbours bought new. it has the 2 piece windscreen and the "super hurricane 6-226" flat head engine. as the 6-230 was an american designed and built engine i very much doubt that it could have been in australia before 1962, your truck may be a bit newer then you thought. ???

dave351cid
05-30-2012, 08:25 AM
ok.. i have been doing some more research. i have the master parts list book with a list of serial numbers and it list the numbers starting with #55178 - 10001 and up to be 1962 4wd cab & chassis with 6-230 OHC tornado engine

first two numbers "55" represent "truck line", third number "1" is "cab chassis" , fourth number "7" is "6 cyl 230 cu in OHC", fifth number "8" is "all 4WD" .
there is no reference to the letter at the end of the serial number.

Ashley
05-31-2012, 03:52 AM
I will check where I came up with 1960, going by your note its got to be 62 +. I thought the windscreen looked like the center bar was taken out and a one piece was screen was fitted. Might be how it was.

another difference i have found with the `60 model 6-226 that we used to have ( my mate owns it now in central nsw )
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/dave351cid/62%20willys%206%20230%20truck/P4130043.jpg
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/dave351cid/62%20willys%206%20230%20truck/P4130043.jpg

and my 6-230,
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/dave351cid/P4250058.jpg
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/dave351cid/62%20willys%206%20230%20truck/P4250058.jpg
is the blinkers. apparently australia made turn indicators compulsery around that time . the `60 6-226 does not have indicators but the 6-230 has them fitted into the front guards. they look to be factory fitted.

Ashley

I reckon your right Dave, my truck has those indicators in the front guards.

dave351cid
05-31-2012, 06:09 AM
i am only guessing that mine might be a `62 build, but it could even be a `63. ??
going by the serial number it should be the 455th 6-230 cab chassis out of Toledo. i think have seen somewhere the build numbers for america but i cant find it right now. looking at the id plates and the numbers i think that the number on the black plate will be the number as they came from the toledo factory and the blue australian plate will be the assembly number as they were put together in brisbane.

that would make mine the 455th out of Toledo and the 24th out of Brisbane.
yours would be the 1298th out of Toledo and the 106th out of Brisbane.

Ashley

I am surprised at the condition of mine, it has 69,000 miles on the clock ( if that is to be believed ) so it would stack up being of a newer vintage. Can you tell me a bit about the engine ? I would like to overhaul it, maybe it is still good.I have a complete gasket kit so will be able to cure all of the oil leaks.

dave351cid
06-01-2012, 06:36 AM
i`m afraid i`m not an expert on the 6-230 engine. only what i have read on the net and i have bought a willys truck workshop manual and parts list with a special suplement for the 6-230 engine which i havent read much of yet.

there are to versions apparently , a standard version with a single barrel carby or a higher horse power rated engine with a 350cfm 2 barrel holley carby. mine has the holley.

there is a note in the parts book that refers to the engine number and an extra letter at the end of some engine numbers.
if there is a "A" at the end of the number then it had .010" undersize rod and main bearings.
"B" = .010" oversize pistons
"AB" = .010" undersize bearings and .010" oversize pistons.

the bottom end of the engine is suposed to be much the same as the 6-226 but i`m not sure what parts are interchangable.

i haven`t checked my engine number yet .
if the story was right mine was suposed to have had a $4000 engine rebuild by the second last owner. it does look as if its been apart not too long ago. i had to clean the carby and it has new gasgets etc. the old guy who had it before me was going to make a camper out of it but he got sick and passed away. i bought it from his familly who said there was reciepts for the engine work but they could not find them.

Things are moving along, cab has been taken off. ( Can I just say we had 5 blokes when lifting it off and could have use a couple more...heavy )120121122123 some photos of the engine components and chassis, getting down to where I can get the chassis away for sand blasting and powder coating.

dave351cid
06-10-2012, 08:17 AM
your getting stuck into it. i hope that mine looks that clean when i get it apart. i wonder what the original engine colour was, mine is painted black, i have also seen pics of afew that are painted like a chevy red.
is that a pto drive hanging off the back of the gearbox ? did it come with a winch.

.... ps..... i like your other toy sitting in the shed there :) . you could have used that to lift the cab off.

another ... ps.... i have remembered something else thats different between our old `60 model 6-226 and my 6-230, the door locks. the internal door locks on 6-226 were activated by pushing the door handle opposite to opening and the 6-230 has seperate lock knobs in the door near the rear top corner of the door trim.

Ashley
06-10-2012, 06:11 PM
The thing hanging off the end of the transfer case is an Overdrive, which I reckon will be a good asset when its back up and going. This engine appears to be like a ford blue, I reckon it might be Chevy red when it goes back in. Going to remove the Engine, Gearbox etc today, have a relative up in NSW who is going to Overhaul it all for me. Look at doing a road trip in the next few weeks to deliver it.
.....Yes I have 4 of those toys in the shed at the moment...aerial spraying is my line of business.
Regarding door locks...mine has little locking knobs where you said they were.

dave351cid
06-11-2012, 06:19 AM
overdrive will be a nice bonus. that was my first thought then changed my mind. i was too lazy to have a look in my books to check for myself. lol.

do you have contacts for parts for the 6-230 ? there is a mob in Turkey (the country) that sells a fair bit of new old stock parts. i found them on evil bay. seem ok to deal with and have some parts that the american reproduction sites dont list.

hmmm... your job sounds more exciting then building powerlines (but i imagine it could be a lot more stressfull).. i would love to own a chopper.

Ashley
06-13-2012, 03:28 AM
No I don't have many contacts regarding the engine, I am hoping to restore with minimal internal bits as it hasn't done many miles and the rest of the jeep is in such good condition. Will be emailing Kaiser Willy for any thing I need and then go from there.

Does any one know what the origional colour was of the chasis and running gear on the Truck ??

dave351cid
07-21-2012, 07:41 AM
sorry i cant help much with the colours. my chassis is that natural aged iron oxide crossed with dried mud colour. dont think they came from the factory like that though. engine block is black but i dont think that is original paint either.

have you seen this one on evil bay ? same colour as yours.

Going to the sandblaster this week and it's going to be Black. No I didn't see that one on evil bay, but I did purchase another 1963 model with T-230 engine, I am going to use what parts I need to make one good one and then offer surplus parts for sale. If you need any thing when your doing yours Dave just let me know and I might be able to help out with bits.

dave351cid
07-22-2012, 05:33 AM
goodo. i think black would be a pretty save bet for the chassis. it would proberly look odd any other colour.

i have been finishing off a lot of little odd jobs that have been hanging around the place and will very soon be starting to get into my old rig.
i will keep you in mind if i need any bits, thanks.

197198199 Well its back and it's time to get to work, need to ream out the new shackle bushes so that the springs can be re-fitted. Original springs have been away at the local spring re-conditioners and look good.

looking good mate.
what kind of paint have you used on the chassis?

1948 Cal Willys Pickup
11-17-2012, 09:49 AM
Frame looks good. I noticed the front cross member looks like it has been modified. Was that something you did or did it come like that? Also noticed that your engine mounts look different then mine. Are those something you fabricated?

Ashley
11-20-2012, 01:49 AM
I reckon they took a gas axe to the front cross member when they fitted the 6-230 Tornado engine, the second truck I have that is being used for spares is the same.It was a pretty rough cut out, we took a little time with a grinder and welder to make it look better prior to Painting. Dave the chassis has been painted with a Matt black and was done at the sand blasters, was thinking about a powder coat but in the end I figure it will only get scratched so took the cheep option. When we pulled the engine down out of this truck we discovered a broken piston that had done some serious damage to the bore of the block. I am about to pull the spare one down so I hope lightening doesn't strike in the same place twice. My mechanic cousin has finished overhauling the Gearbox, Transfer box and over drive, and looking forward to hopefully ending up with a serviceable 6-230 to bolt it all back up to.

dave351cid
11-20-2012, 08:35 AM
sad about the busted piston mate. can you tell if it was still standard bore size.
i will have to take a look at my ild girl and see if the front cross member is moded the same way. i dont think that attention to the finer detail was top of the priority list when they made these trucks. does your chassis have reinforcing plates welded to the outside just behind the cab? all the ones i have looked at have them and they all look like they were done in someones backyard. the finish is pretty agricultral, lol.

i have finaly made a start on mine, got the tray off and chassis pretty well stripped behind the cab. will have to put some pics up soon.

204Dave hit it right on the money with the agricultural finish. Here is a pic of the wonderful modification I had in mine. This is after I did some grinding and cleaning of it. I am still not happy with it. As you can see in the photo I have it taped for cutting. Ill cut out the bad parts and weld in something a bit stronger. I do have to say that one of the previous owners did a good job welding in 1/4" angle iron in front of the crossmember and welded the radiator support bracket very nicely. Once I get that done and the new engine mounts fabbed I will be taking the frame to the blasters. Not sure yet if I will powder coat. Depends on the price. I have been doing my own powder coating on the smaller parts. Have to say its pretty durable and fairly easy to do.

Ashley
11-21-2012, 07:31 AM
Yes Dave the Chassis does have reinforcing plates welded to the out side, all very Agricultural....say's it all about the Truck really.

Cal..does that steering damper actually work ???

1948 Cal Willys Pickup
11-21-2012, 12:54 PM
Yeah Ash. Mostly helps with off road environment. Keeps the steering wheel from jerking out of your hands when you hit something awkward. Probably not necessary if you keep it on road unless you curb you tires alot. Never been down under but cant imagine too many curbs in your neck of the woods.

i was thinking more about the "Bruce Highway"that runs past my place here. its the main road link that runs from Brisbane to Cains up the Queensland coast. it can be a shocker, especially after a good wet season.

I just got done Googling it. You are what would we say here in the states "out in the sticks". I think I saw 3 houses near the St Lawrence area. Man you dont want to break down out there. Make sure your truck is running great before you make that drive.

Hey Ash, you said earlier in this thread you were putting in a 6-230. How are you going to mount it? I am pretty much doing the same thing. I would love to see some pics of your mounts if you have them.

dave351cid
12-02-2012, 08:58 AM
i think Ashley`s truck came from the factory with the 6-230 engine the same as mine.

i can get some pics of the engine mounts with engine still in place .

I would love to seem some pics of what you have.

Ashley
12-02-2012, 06:22 PM
Yes Cal my Truck was factory fitted with a 6-230 and from what I can see is that they had to cut a small section out of the front cross member223 Dave would be able to take some photos of the engine fitted. Mine is sitting beside the chassis at the moment. I have a spare engine plate bracket if you need.

12-03-2012, 09:50 AM
Thanks for the photo Ash. I like how you boxed it in. I am in the same boat with my engine. Its sitting next to the frame. I need to get my mounts fashioned so I can finish the frame. Once that is done this thing should really start coming together.

What is your 6-230 like Cal ? Is it a goer ? Do you have a lead on where you can get parts for it ?

Thanks Dave for posting the pics. It has definitely given me some insight. They are nothing at all like what I had in mine hehe. I noticed the steering linkage on the right in the pic above or what looks like the steering linkage. I ordered some general purpose mounts but will have to work them out to get everything to work. I will take photos as I go. I am picking up a cherry picker from a friend so I can finally proceed. I havent been doing much on it lately due to the holidays with family here. I should start picking it up again soon though. Again thanks for the picks.

Ash, I havent found and reliable places for super hurricane parts. Mostly just people selling used stuff then I just make it work. It ran great when I picked it up but going with a gm 250 motor which came with the truck. Easier for parts as most people just throw away their 250's here in the States.

Just a couple of Pic's showing what little progress I have made, work doesn't let me get much time. 245I have got the springs and cross member fitted back onto the Chassis. Got a set of Reamers on good oll eBay which did the job on the new spring buses. Gearbox, Transfer and Over Drive has been overhauled and ready. 244 246

Ashley

G-day Cal.....It was the plan to paint every thing but the gearbox has missed out. Will make sure the engine and bell housing gets done, any idea what colour the original Tornado 230 engine was ??

1948 Cal Willys Pickup
12-31-2012, 10:39 AM
You know Ash thats a good question. I have never thought to look that up. I assumed back in the day they didnt color the motors. Let me do a bit of research.

1948 Cal Willys Pickup
12-31-2012, 11:04 AM
So this was what I was able to find. My engine was orange but I didnt think it was original, however the factory used an orange sealer under black semi gloss. I cant find any traces of black on my engine but since my vehicle had few owners before me I cant imagine the farmer painting the motor orange with all the "agricultural" mods that were done on the vehicle. Apparently Willys did have a policy for the cylinder heads where standard compression engines had a blue head and high compression engines had a black head although this policy was never enforced, ever. I think if you found a blue head out there it would be a unique find if it was original. I am unable to find out what shades of these colors was used. Essentially everything onder the hood should be semi gloss black with the exception of the oil filter which would have been orange and some parts like the radiator might have been olive green due to the parts being universal with the military vehicles. There is very little information out there with anything that I would call definitive on the subject. If you find out anything else please let me know. For myself I just planned on gloss black with chrome. Its easy, cheap and looks good in this guys opinion. Good luck.

Ashley
12-31-2012, 09:32 PM
I have some photos of the spare engine I am hoping will be OK with some parts from the original if needed, I am pretty keen to have the 230 in there to keep it as stock as possible.Cal I am thinking gloss black would be the conservative way to go, but chevy red would stand out in the newly painted engine bay ???? decisions.247248249 Got the Diffs back sitting in place today, had the diffs re assembled by a ( Street and Race Differential Specialist ) and he gave them a good bill of health.250251

I still love the look of that engine. What size diff's are you running? I think your engine color should fit with the color of the rest of your vehicle. After seeing your engine, I may switch to a blue that will be on the interior as well as all the trim. What color do you plan for your base or will it be a 1 color car? The only problem with red might be if it sticks out unusually against the colors of the rest of the vehicle. Thats just my opinion. On the other hand if the whole vehicle is red I dont think that would look good either. Good luck and Happy New Year.

252253 I found these photo's on the net of a resto a guy had done and the Tornado looks a treat under the hood.I am thinking of painting the jeep Blue all over, or with a white roof.

It looks nice simple and clean. I like how he did the fan blades red. I think I would have tried to dress it up more with red accents but I wouldnt have done the engine red. I think light, sky blue, baby blue whatever color you want to call it is pretty classy especially with the white. I think you would be safe with a blue engine as well no matter what the shade. Mine will be a dark charcoal grey with the baby blue accents and off white interior. Its going to look sick at least it will if it comes out like I imagine it in my head. I'm a long ways away from that though.

I know you are not sure what color you want but if it were me I would go with the stock color on the engine especially with the color scheme you are choosing. I think it would look nice and you can match the orininal if you or your paint shop does that type of work.

Will go with something like you said a light blue, our helicopter engines come out of the OH shop done in a grey and they always look good and clean. A polished rocker hat and a few high lighted bits should make it pretty neat. We will open up the second engine in a couple of weeks so should know if we have a viable engine option.

Man I can't wait to see how it turns out. After reading your previous posts about Aussie Willys I wondered about mine. The frame is set up for brakes and steering linkage on both sides which is kind of odd for an American vehicle. Got some more things to research.

Mate its an interesting journey doing the jeep, you learn so much about the old rig and some of the people you meet have got stories as well. The old guy who put my Diffs back together whipped out an old photo album of when he was a kid and his Dad had a Willys wagon for the family car. When the engine quit they modified it with a Chrysler slant 6.

Ash, you are so right. Its kind of cool doing some of the investigating on a particular vehicle and actually getting the stories behind the vehicle. Speaking of which do you know if there is a special annotation for Aussie vehicles on the VIN?

Cal if you go back a bit I posted a couple of photos of the data plates and there is an additional one put there by Willys Australia ( Blue in colour ) with the ID and number of the vehicle. I found in some other research I did that there was only about 308 Willys trucks built by Willys Australia with the 6-230 designation.

That bit of info I got.........
According to the CJ3B Page Website your '60 Willys pickup may have been produced by Willys Motors Australia Pty. Ltd. in Brisbane.

Although Willys Jeeps had been assembled and sold in Australia since the end of World War II, Willys Motors of Australia apparently took over from 1958 through 1968 producing a number of Willys/Jeeps locally.

Ashley, your truck appears to be one of the "6-230" cab and chassis models. During the 10 year span between '58 and '68 Willys Motors Australia reportedly produced 366 Willys 6-230 models...which would mean your truck is probably pretty rare.

If you find out more about your truck's history, please let us know. Also, if any readers out there have some input please feel free to use the "Comment" section below.

Ashley...keep us up-to-date on your restoration as well. Thanks!

Wow man I am kind of jealous of your truck. Aussie vehicle with the blue head and everything. You got a real winner there. I though I had remembered reading something in your post before about the vin. Thanks for the reminder. I will let you know what I come up with.

G'day Ash,
You might be interested to know that just up the road from you are a 1965 6-230 Utility Wagon and a 1965 6-230 Willys Pickup being restored simultaneously?
I'll take some time in the next couple of days to read your posts.
Just thought you would like to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE :-)
All the best,
Ben

G-day Ben, you are probably just up the road now as I have had a house move since my last post. This jeep project now lives in Clare. Moving house has meant not much work has been done on the jeep, but there has been some progress with my mechanic friend is steadily working on the engine. Block has gone off for a re bore to 040 oversize rings and pistons.
Regards
Ashley

G'day Ashley,
You really are just down the road now :-)
The Distributor looks good.
Got a couple of questions for you...if you don't mind.
1.Will you be maintaining the position of the existing fuel pump? I ask for a good reason<chuckle>
2. I believe you had work done on your diffs by someone in Adelaide...is that right? If so...can you give me their name and just what they did?
3. I apologise for not getting back to you sooner but I have tried to configure the forum to send me emails when I post, or get a reply. I can't it to work<grrrrr>

Hope the weather is fine in Clare and not too cold?

All the best,
Ben

G-Day Ben...the guy I got to re-assemble my diffs was Boss Automotive Engineering in Lonsdale. Graham on 83870178, I gave him the OH bearing kit and got him to put the diffs back together, he has done a couple of sets as my friend from Wilunga is doing a Truck as well. Few around when you scratch the surface. Not sure what the go with the fuel pump is ?? I have a replacement item to fit back where the old one was, is there an issue ??
We should catch up sometime, be good to see your two vehicles. Cheers Ashley

Left hand steering knuckle and axle assembly got done today, 464 A bit of progress is good, hoping to get the other side done this week. The engine block is back from the shop, has had an acid bath and re-bore to .040, pistons re-aligned and fitted onto the rods. The engine is an exciting project and I am very much looking forward to seeing that go back together and cranking it back into life.

It has been a busy time lately and there has been not a lot of progress on my Jeep. My mechanic mate has let me know that he has completed the Engine rebuild and I have to arrange a road trip to northern NSW to pick it up. So there has been progress without me doing much. Looking forward to getting some engine pic's to put up for you to see, cant wait to see it myself.

good to hear that you are slowly getting somewhere with the truck.
its hard to find time to work on them when you have a full time life to keep up with as well.

Finding time is difficult Dave, but it doesn't have to be done tomorrow. Organized for the cab to go off to the resto shop today, figured I would just throw some $'s towards that part of the project. I am having difficulty in choosing a colour to paint the Cab ???? any ideas ??

g`day Ashley.
i haven`t made a lot of progress on mine for a while. have the chassis completly stripped and chemical cleaned at a local galvanizing joint. coated it in rust converter and back in the shed but thats about it. been busy with work and trying to extend my shed to give myself more dry storage.
i have also been talking with a paint/panel guy in Bundaberg who is keen to have a go at the cab. i was going to try and do it myself but i doubt i will ever have the time to finish it and i am wanting a good quality finish so might farm out that part of the build to someone that knows what their doing.

i think i will do mine in dark green with pale cream/off white ? roof and door recesses. and a dressed timber tray .

kind of similar colour scheme to this one in the thread below but darker green and no chrome side strip.

Dave I found a Jeep on the net that was a Grenade Green Metallic that looked pretty good. It is a stock 2006 Hummer H-3 color and quiet subtle with a metallic lift. Taking the cab around to a local Auto restorer on Tuesday so the process will begin to move along a bit.

has come up looking good mate. your a long way infront of me with your build.

what was the condition like of the water pump and alloy timing cover ? much corrosion ?

Ashley
01-23-2014, 06:14 PM
Dave we had two water pumps to choose from so we were lucky that one was in good shape. The timing cover had some corrosion on the water pipe outlet / inlet but was repairable. The engine has a re-bore and oversized to plus 006, new piston and rings and bearings, all new welsh plugs, Head reface, valve grind and valves, New Clutch asembley. Overhauled the starter and generator. About as good a repair as you could achieve I reckon with the limited amount of parts available, a lot of web searching to source all the bits. If it was a 226 engine there seems to be **** loads of parts for that engine.
The second engine I have has a lot of good parts on it if you run into problems rebuilding yours Dave, only serious damage was a scoured bore from a broken piston. I think your engine is still running, so I don't believe you will have too much problem.

dave351cid
01-25-2014, 06:06 AM
thanks for the offer Ashley. yep, my engine is a good runner and is supposedly been rebuilt not that long ago (as in km) . the water pump is a bit corroded where the hoses go on but i have a spare non running engine that the alloy looks ok on. i was given the spare engine about 20 years ago and it had been sitting for many years before that so it hasnt had much water in the cooling system to corrode it. sadly it has spent most of that time sitting outside with just a sheet of tin over it when it was lucky and no carby so i dont think the internals will be very healthy.

your right about the scarcity of parts for the 6/230.

Ashley

737 Work has begun on the cabin. After all the paint and bog is off you there is some repairing to do, mainly around bottom of doors and where guards and steps bolt to the cab. All in all you have to expect that.

i havent started on my cab yet. hope its not hiding too many disasters. i can see a couple of spots where the previous owner has tried some repairs that will need revisiting. have you settled on a colour yet.
