Back in 1948, service techs repaired and adjusted voltage regulators.
Here is a link to a Chrysler service video - but it applies to the three-relay Willys regulators as well. The regulator being serviced is a 35 -44 amp regulator that is probably very similar to the early post-war Willys systems.

It may seem to be a bit "hokey", but it gives a very good description of what goes on in one of these mystery "black boxes"
