I would like to install an extra gas tank in my 1951 CJ3A. I want to mount it behind the rear axle, up under the floor. Any one ever do this? What is the best tank to use?

Welcome Paul Pouliot,
A post '72 V6 or V8 CJ 5 gas tank mounts behind the axle. The hitch V frame would have to be removed on your Willy's frame, and the fill hose will have to be fabricated into the body.

Another popular idea is to remove the tool box on the passenger side, and there are manufacturers that build a gas tank that mirrors the driver's side. A crossover hose can be used to fill both tanks without having to turn the Jeep around to fill the passenger tank.

You could always fabricate or have one fabricated for you if you cant find one. Let us know how it goes.
Just checked out your photo album. Great shots man! It looks like serious clay there. At first I thought the bike was dropped into concrete. I cant believe the footprints in the mud. You didn't even sink in it. It is so thick it holds you up! No wonder that axle shaft twisted off.

An idea that was given to me, which I actually like the sound of. Take an old military "jerry can" and solder a fitting on the bottom to attach a fuel line. Add one or even two in the bed of the jeep and there you go. Plenty of extra fuel, and it looks cool, you just sacrifice a little space in the bed.

That is a good idea but you won’t want to forget to vent the jerry can.

The Jerry can idea is an awesome idea '56, but like '51 said, you'd have to vent the top of the tank to flow correctly. The Jerry can would be the least intrusive way to extend your milage, and the easiest to refill.
