Just purchased a 1957 Willys Pickup in good shape. I need to get to the brakes to inspect them. It has Warn spring loaded locking hubs and I wondered how to get the hub/drum/etc off to look at the parts. Please direct me to the right sub forum. Thanks!!!!

Welcome Jeffjjeep,

Depending on which model of Warn hub you have, the removal process is a little bit different.

The early type with the lock out only bolted to the bub;

Or the two piece, more modern Warn hub;

Both hubs work the same, but the more modern hub is a bit easier to disassemble as far as being able to get at the snap rings. Remove the allen screws from the front cover, then the inner snap ring on the axle. Remove the outer snap ring that holds the mechanism within the hub, then the guts will come out. Unbolt the remainder of the lock out housing. After that, then you are left with the hub nuts, (inner and outer).

The early hubs only have one snap ring, and to access it, you have to un bolt the lock out from the hub. The snap ring will be on the axle.

jeffjjeep Welcome
If you just want to look at the brakes you really don’t need to take the hubs off. You can pull the wheels off and the brake drums should come right off.
Might have to beat on them a little but they should come right off.

I don't understand. I pulled the wheel and the hub is on the outside. I can't see how anything would be holding the drum on since it has the wheel studs.

The drum is on the inside of the hub. You have to pull the hub to access the brakes. The wheel studs are swedged to the drums if they are original. The metal has to be cut out of the hub to press the wheel studs out to remove the hub from the drum.

Got it. So I DO have to remove the Warn hub to get the drum off to replace the wheel cylinder and the shoes, no?

Yes, the hub must come off.

Here is an in depth instruction sheet from Warn, to help put everything in perspective;
