View Full Version : Puzzling Component below Carb on 48 Willys Truck

New to the forum, and would appreciate any input on this an future posts. In the process of improving my newly acquired 48 Willys truck. Immediate issue is bogging down on acceleration. Can be many issues, but am starting with the carb. Upon removal, I found this casting section and u shaped tube & Ball between manifold and throttle body. Any ideas?? Purpose?/ Do i need it?. Could it have been used in the past as some sort of pre heater mechanism?? Thanks in advance,

I can't wait to hear what that might be. It does look like some type of pre-heat device.

Welcome icetime33,

That looks to me that the item shown is a high idle mechanism for extreme Arctic temps? I'll have to research this a bit further. What's the model and make on the carb?

It almost looks like there may have been attachments to this piece in the past since there are 2 screws on one side and a recessed round pocket, but this is the way it came.

Interesting, to say the least.

Could it be the throttling portion of one of the velocity governors?

i will take and post a few more pics for everyone. Google has turned up nothing for me, and I am decent at searching. Still puzzled.

Whatever it is, nobody else has one, so it probably isn't critical to make things run. It can't be helping air/fuel mixture flow into the intake manifold.

I'd take it out and see if it runs better.

(Maybe it's a J.C. Whitney special 100 miles per gallon carburetor add-on).

By the way post us a picture of your truck. Show us yours and I'll show you mine (48 TRUCK!)

I am out of town so will post some more pics on Sat. For now here are 2 of the 1951 under restoration (with super hurricane) and a rear shot of the 1948 . In fact the 48 DOES have an original, working marvel mystery oilier. I agree with the two previous posters, that removing this section may improve performance. If nothing discovered to the contrary, it will be left out after the carb rebuild. Thanks to all so far.......

Looking good!

As for the device, I am in for take it out. I have to agree with LarrBeard, the contraption cannot be of benefit to airflow.
