What is the correct engine color(s) for the flathead L226 in utility pickups? I see a brick red often. Overall coverage? I ask because on tear down my original oil pan was black? What is a readily available engine enamel spray option? Any info, thoughts or details are greatly appreciated.

If you've got one there's a dab of original paint somewhere just above metal... Scrub? Here's a pictures of what must be an original engine, maybe your vintage. If not, let me know and I'll keep digging. But you are correct some look unpainted from factory.

The dark brick red looks like whats on mine. I was curious if anyone had sourced a modern spray option that was close?

This guy went through it all, well documented. But he ended up blue!

Here's one possible, although looks exterior, "Redwood Poly":

Still working.. here's an interesting tidbit:

" a 226, tranny, and transfer case in Northern California for $400 OBO: http://humboldt.craigslist.org/pts/3303796606.html If I remember, the red paint (if it's from the factory) means it's a high altitude/higher compression version." Old Willy’s forum

And final answer: call this shop. He will know.. https://walcks4wd.com/
