View Full Version : 1966 CJ5 runs but won't move...

My 1966 Willys CJ5 was operating fine and then.... out of nowhere, it won't move forward in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd and won't move backwards in reverse. The engine runs fine, she starts right up. But no movement. I can start the engine without the clutch pressed in - it's as if I'm starting the engine in neutral. Anyone experience this before? I'm just getting my feet wet as a Willys owner so any advice on what the problem might be is much appreciated.

It sounds like your transfer case is in neutral, sometimes it slips into neutral if it’s not fully engaged into low or high range.
With the engine running and your transmission in 1st gear and your foot working the clutch try shifting the transfer case levers, the longer one back and the shorter one forward.
Let us know if that helps the situation.

BTW that is a picture perfect Old CJ5!!!

TJones, thanks for the advice. I tried what you recommended and there is a slight change. Now when I apply the throttle, she moves forward slightly, almost like the front wheels are against a curb. She tries to move but can't. Any other thoughts?

Thanks, once I get her running again I'll post a few photos. It's brutal not being able to drive her around this time of the year.

It sounding more like a clutch issue, keep us updated as you dig deeper into it.

If there is a grease fitting zerk anywhere nearby squirt some in there. My 64 works much better when the linkage is properly aligned and tightened down. Won't shift into gear if it has no grease or misaligned.

I am thinking TJ is on to it. It sounds like the clutch might be gone.
