Hi all, I have a 1960 Willys truck with dana 53 rear axle. looking for best way to increase speed. gear swap/warn overdrive? What gears should I run in the dana 53. I would not run the front axle. Thanks

I think by far the quickest and easiest way is with an overdrive. This also allows you to keep the low ratios.

Thanks for a reply, any chance you know how many mph this over drive would give me? Thanks

Use this link to a calculator to figure what will be happening exactly. Use your overdrive ratio as third gear. (i.e. .75 with a Saturn from KW)

In general it is like one more "gear" or "shift". it bumps you up about 10 - 15 MPH at the same speed. So if it was comfortable at 40 it will now be good at 50 - 55. If it is the Saturn from KW, it is a 25% overdrive so just tack on 25% to you current speeds.

"So if it was comfortable at 40 it will now be good at 50 - 55 ..."
We have been having a number of conversations lately about "How fast..?".. In BMorgil's response, I am assuming that "comfortable" means engine RPM and stress - not necessarily how well it will drive and handle at 25% overdrive.
We don't want to get into "Hey y'all, watch this" type of situations."

Excellent clarification Larry!
