Well I couldn't stand not having anything to do after retiring so I started another Jeep Project.
I sold the "Orange Crush" to a guy and he wanted me to built a Jeep for his Son out of a Jeep he bought (local to me) from a college roommate, and that is where my story/project begins.
He bought a really Nice 58 CJ-5 with a stock F-134, T-90 and a Dana 18 transfer case that his roommates Dad restored and he wanted something with a bigger engine, power steering and better brakes on it to getter to WO better .
So my buddy and I put our thinking caps on (Which at our ages is kinda hard to do) and came up with a BrainStorm of an idea.
I knew a guy that had a 1972 CJ-5 (the first year at that time that AMC came out with the AMC 304 V8), we knew the tub was the same as the 58 tub, but the fenders and hood were 5"s longer. So that is where it all came to life.
Here are some pictures of the 58 and the 72 "Donor" I'll call it, The Owner wanted to use the 58 body bc it was almost new, so we are in the midst of putting it on the 72 chassis.
I will update you all as progress continues, I am sure that we will run into hiccups along the way but if this Forum can chime in at anytime like you all did with my Project we will getter done!!!!
Well it appears that I have to resize all my pictures and convert them jpeg format, been a while since I have posted anything1106911070110691107111072

Actually Larrbeard we did a compression check on the motor and each cylinder had 147-150 lbs of compression, and the leak down test was between 3 & 4% on each hole which surprised us both, after looking the motor was evidently rebuilt in 2021 according to a tag we found on a valve cover :cool:

Looking good there JT! Will be a fun project for sure. And should make for a sweet driver jeep. That 304 will be nice! A thread was started awhile ago about the 58. He was looking for engine swap ideas. And hadn't posted in awhile. I was wondering what had happened. By the looks of things you do good work. This will be fun to follow along.

TJ does great work. I had the chance to run Orange Crush around Bmorgil's side forty. It was way more healthy than one would expect in a short wheelbase Jeep. It was just the other side of wicked. The 304 will be ready to go with those numbers.

Test1328 it was already painted and he didn’t want us to paint it, but I just dropped the original fender off today so the body shop could get the paint matched up to paint the 72 grille, 2-new fenders and new hood for the 72 CJ5.
This is kind of a miss-match of parts and years to make one:cool:
As soon as I get the paint code from the paint shop I will getter to ya!!!
I guess he has a camera that takes a picture and tells what colors and how much to blend to match it:rolleyes:
gmwillys
01-31-2024, 12:22 AM
The paint match cameras work really well. I had to have the right front fender replaced on my Monte Carlo that was painted silver metallic. They put the scanner on the fender and it matched perfectly. The scanner makes concessions for paint fade, because the original factory paint code was too dark.

I should’ve mentioned this Jeep is supposed to resemble the OSU color scheme when we are finished with it, so we left the body gray and the full cage (when completely built), the wheels and some other pieces/parts are all going to get powder coated the scarlet red color.

Making a little ahead way this week, got the top frame all mounted up, tilt steering column installed, motor set in with headers bolted on and the clutch/brake pedals mounted up with the clutch linkage situated where it is supposed to be verses where it was in the 58 CJ.

Now it's time to take the windshield and plate we made for the dash to mount the tilt column and get them powder coated to match the windshield frame hinges.
Mounting the rear bumper up to hold the spare tire is going to be nothing short of an "Engineering Nightmare" only because it was designed to fit a 86 YJ..............
Full Roll cage fab starts next week mounted to the frame in 4 spots.

Very nice work! I'd be interested to see more on how and where you're attaching the cage to the frame. Also, more details such as the size of tube and how you're routing the cage within the body would be nice to see. It's a little hard to see much detail with the small pictures.
TJones
03-04-2024, 06:25 PM
I’ll get some close up pictures tomorrow of the 4 places of where and how we are connecting it to the frame.
Had to do a little engineering to make sure we can remove it once it’s all built so we can remove it to getter powder coated and if someone wants to take it out later.
The tubing we’re using is 1.75 x .095 seamless.

Here are some pictures of how we fastened it to the frame;
Looking from the driver's side to the passenger side, the front we out another plate on the firewall side to bolt up to the inside and cut a piece of tubing to weld to the body mount on the frame and the back (behind the seats) we put a piece of 2" x 4" x 3/8"T square stock across the top of the frame rails (welded to the frame) from side to side and and bolted our plates to it.

03-06-2024, 04:16 PM
Thanks for the pictures, TJ. Looks like excellent work!
A few other questions, though. I assume that you don't have to worry about the under seat gas tank if you're using a 72 chassis? Seems like the tubing would interfere with that if that was the case. And, likewise, I assume you're mounting your seats to the tubing frame and that is the purpose for that framework?
TJones
03-06-2024, 05:49 PM
Yes test exactly.
The tanks on all the 72’s are mounted between the frame rails in the rear and the seats do mount to the frame we built and we had to lower it from the original seat height due to the owner is tall so we tried to get it lower so his noodle didn’t hit the cage and could easily see through the windshield.

That is a nice setup for sure TJ. The frame to roll bar connection is critical to a proper functioning roll cage. A nice 5 point harness hooked to the bars and that cage, should do a heck of a job of protecting the driver as much as possible.

That extended cab gladiator is super neat. So glad it was saved. Many moons ago when I was a very young whipper snapper, the local vintage truck dealer had a crew cab J truck. That thing was really cool, being full four door. But it really needed a 6bt cummins....
That little willys hot rod is pretty cool, but the intercooler is not really doing anything. I can see if they were keeping the grill visible. But their sacrificing some horsepower, that's for sure.

Just be careful with that 200 HP Go-Kart.... Don't let the Grandkids do donuts in the front yard. Yeah, but who will the neighbors talk about 20 years from now, the guy who kept his lawn nice or the guy who ripped sick donuts in a 70 year old jeep!! And it's got a roll cage and safety harnesses, what could go wrong.
Man TJ, that thing is shaping up quick! It's looking great! I'll bet it will run down the road very nicely.

56' sounds like he knows exactly how to impress the neighbors! That's why some build em' 56, to make some noise!

No donuts in the yard guys around here!!!!
The neighbors only get impressed when we fire up the shifter kart and buzz up and down the street and burn donuts on the asphalt
Well maybe not impressed as much as pissed to the point they had the city put up a 25 MPH sign up:D

A bit baffled
Took the girl in to have the front end checked out (castor, camber and toe in) and everything checked out pretty good.
It just likes to take off on its own “darting left then right”, it will wear you out trying to keep it on the road at 35-40 mph.
The guy from Akron Truck Frame told me to put the stock tires back on it and try it to eliminate the big tires and wheels first.
Then he said I should get HD shackles front and rear bc it’s flexing the shackles when it steers, I’ll try that after the tire swap.
It’s really acting like it needs more positive castor put in it:confused:
Kinda Baffled, the guy at ATF said the castor is kinda like a grocery cart affect and the front wheels need to follow along.

Pretty easy to add some positive caster TJ. Stick some wedges in the spring pads and see if that doesn't help. Watch the operating angles at the u-joint as you rotate the axle. Your guys explanation of castor is spot on.
You need about 5 deg of positive castor on that thing. Too much is hard to have on a short wheelbase. I have seen and used 6 in some some fast cars. Too much caster and you will know you have gone too far. The steering wheel will be harder to turn at speed and the steering wheel wont return to center very well. What numbers did he read for caster, camber and toe.

I’ll get the numbers this morning as I’m going to pick it up shortly!!!

Okay I got the skivvy on everything!!!
The castor is 3 degrees, he’s used to semis not short WB vehicles!!
Camber is set at 1 degree and toe in is at 1/16-1/8”
So I need to get a 3-4 degree wedge and jamb it in the axle perch between the axle and spring I guess.
Is that correct Bob?

Yes. The camber cant be changed but the caster can. Tilt the top back 2 to 3 deg more and see if it likes that. That's all the camber you want and the toe is good. Are the king pin bearings set too tight?
Something like these:

This is the new style front axle (Dana 30) with the open knuckles Bob, I can change the camber with offset ball joints but I think it’s good at 1 degree camber.
I will run to Summit and get the wedges and throw them in to see if she likes that adjustment better.

I threw the stock tires on it and no difference whatsoever!!!
Back to the 2-4 degree wedges I suppose.
I think tomorrow I’ll go get a digital angle finder and check the bottom ball joint to see what angle it’s actually at degree wise!!!
Then go from there and shoot for 5 degrees positive caster.

Ahh its a 30. With real wide tires and any offset at all on the rims, getting the camber down real low is helpful. Like .25 to .5 is where I like the wide tires, with 1/16 of toe if any. As the tires and offsets increase, the tire stands more on its edges from camber. Toe is a big drag with wide tires. Toe is a bit misunderstood. Under load as you push a car down the road, even if you set it at 0 static it wont be 0 when its moving. It will toe out or toe in as the push loads the components forcing them outward or inward, and when the vehicle moves through jounce and rebound. I give them very little toe.
That is not why it is darting right and left however. I think some more caster will help. A V8 CJ has a lot of weight over the front axle with very little on the rear, which isn't far from the front. Great for turning but, tracking straight isn't their strong point. On the 30 make sure you don't have a ball joint hanging up. I did have some warranty with ball joints on those getting badly worn (or frozen and alleged defective) and locking up under load. Especially if it they have been sitting. This will definitely cause it to dart left and right. Make sure the ball joints are smooth and not catching or ratcheting when they move. 3 deg of camber is a standard pass car setting. It should work OK., maybe wander a bit more than you are used to when used in a CJ. I think 5 works better. You have a high bar Tim, is it a lot different than the Orange Crush?

Thanks Doctor Dana!!!
It’s close to the OC but the offset is the same, tire size is bigger the OC had 32”s x 10.00 x15 on 8” rims and this has 32’s x 10:50 x 15 on 10” rims?
This has 2.5” lift verses 2” on the OC.
This has a V8 verses V6 but the frame is 5.5” longer, and I do understand the weight to inch difference in length (Good Point!!)
Both have PS, but after the caster change I really need to check the ball joints for drag or hang up I guess!!!

Those ball joints can hide TJ. When they are real bad you can tell just by moving them. When they just start to go they get loose or "sticky" under load at loaded height. A tough thing to duplicate. If there are miles on them, I wouldn't hesitate to refresh that area anyway. Did your Alignment guy check the track on all 4 wheels? If it isn't tracking straight you will definitely fight that also. He should have a reading for the track if he did a 4 wheel check.

Bob he didn’t mention the tracking alignment but I Will call him on that on Monday.
I wonder myself about the rubber bushings in the spring shackles that may be giving me trouble as well or even the flex in the shackles themselves ?
Which makes me want to switch to solid brass bushings in the springs and shackles and maybe a piece of 1/4” plate welded between the 2 shackles to stiffen it all up?
What’s your thought on that??

If the components are in good shape they shouldn't be a problem. If they are worn that is a valid place to look however. That setup works fine on other vehicles. I think you are looking for something that is out of whack. The thrust from a tracking error or those d#$n ball joints. If you are using the factory spring locations and shackle setup that's pretty proven. If all looks good in the suspension components, I would experiment with some stronger caster settings. It sounds like you are fighting more than some mild wander here, if its really fighting you I am thinking it is something more obvious.

The shackles and bushings are all new and like you said it’s all been Proven to work.
There are just SO MANY variables that enter into this Very Complicated Formula and then you lift it, change tire size, lengthen the vehicle:cool:
I guess we just take it as it comes, change one thing at a time and I’ll start with adding more caster into it a little atta time!!!
I did read this morning that Dana Engineers added camber built into their axles from side to side for the pitch on roadways, now that is impressive to say the least, were you part of that Engineering Design Bob???
WOW that did amaze me!!!

Doctor Dana Comes through again!!!
I put 2* shims in today and with the big tires and wheels it’s about 70% better!!!
Monday I’ll get some 4* shims, longer center bolts to keep everything lined up, and some longer u-bolts and hopefully it’ll be right on track!!
No pun intended:):)
Thanks Dr Dana AGAIN !!!!!!
This things got me about wore (the ****) plum out:(:(

This is a prime example to why these car project shows on TV or You Tube do not show all the issues that they have with the builds. It's all fun and games until it comes to dialing everything in for perfect performance. TJ, you are supposed to be retired not tired.
