1950 Jeepster Solenoid question

Newbie to restoration work here. My starter engages if I touch the negative lead of the battery directly to the starter wire, but when I install a solenoid, it does not work (positive ground). I replaced the solenoid, but does not work. I even grounded the solenoid directly to the positive connection to the battery...there is one wire from the ignition to the "S" post on the solenoid. I have tried wiring the battery to both posts of the solenoid.

I work many hours at my job, but am now on vacation...would make my year if you can help me start this...thanks.
