Location of VIN on CJ 3A

I'm in the process of buying a CJ 3A. The current owner does not have in pink slip (it was misplaced sometime in the past) and he's trying to find the VIN so he can get a duplicate. I understand the VIN for a CJ3A is should be on a little steel plate that is riveted on the fight side of the firewall under in hood. However, someone has removed it (the holes are there - but no plate). Is there another place on the vehicle where the VIN number will appear? On the frame somewhere?
