vin confussion

hi all in the states ,i am looking for the vin number and all i can find is the serial number tag on the firewall the number is 8513 6148 is this the vin or or am i looking in the wrong place can anybody help

i am in australia so not 110 percent sure on the states numbering systems but i think you will find that the serial number on older cars is the equivilent to a vin number on later models. same thing , different name.
