Teflon tape does not dissolve or deteriorate in gasoline - it's OK for making up joints if you don't have the Loc-tite or Permatex stuff.

In the '48 we put it just under the fuel filter - which you can just see in the attached picture - and that kept it out of the way. The Mr. Gasket regulator works very well and isn't all that hard...
