    Vin location

Hi there, I am new to the forum and have my first Jeep

I have a 1949 Overlander truck that I am getting ready to register.
I am having trouble finding a Vin number on the chassis, can anyone advise where they are located?

    Thank you

Do you have a plate on the firewall near the steering column ?

I don't think so but will check again.
The truck is at the mechanics workshop so will drop past and check

    Thanks Rondo
I just rang my mechanic to have a look in that location
I am in Australia and I can get collector plates but have opted for standard rego as it is less complicated but a bit more expensive.
My Willy was an Australian delivered RHD model from new

    Location of Nameplate and VIN

The LHD '47 and '48 trucks had a nameplate on the fire wall just above the steering column. I don't know if the plate stayed there for the RHD trucks or if it moved to the other side. There have been largely unsubstantiated reports that serial numbers were stamped on the frame or in obscure places in the cab - but we checked all of the rumors and found no mystery numbers.

We really suspect that it didn't get a VIN or serial number until someone screwed the plate on. On my truck, which is clearly a '48 (e.g two-piece front seat, cloth headliner) - the serial number says it should be a '49. Someone in Toledo reached into the wrong box that summer day in late 1948!

As we restored the '48, folks marveled at the provisions for RHD modifications; the brake and clutch hangers, mounting holes for master cylinder, cutouts and stampings in the floorboard and firewall, the instruments in the mid-dash - even the hole for the RHD ignition key!

Thanks for the reply Larrbeard, if I can't find a plate there I will apply to the authorities for a new number

Thanks for the compliment Rondo. The truck in general is in good condition but I don't intend on restoring her to showroom condition, I like it to look a bit like a working truck and daily driver
Will use it to run into town for groceries etc
They are a beautiful looking vehicle
