TJones, I really like your JEEP and the black highlights you did is "icing on the cake". I think it looks great!

    I also agree with Larry's "RULE 2".

I do have several photos of original CJ3B's. One is a 1954 and the other is a 1963. The only Willys that was painted white on these jeeps were on the sides of the hood.

    That thing is perfect.

Even on the later trucks, the J-Series, painted tailgate lettering is unknown. IMO it varied on the lot: some tailgates painted lettering, sometimes no paint.

On my truck I was convinced jeep lettering was not painted, due to early in run. After scrubbing off the patina, a little dab of original white was revealed. Even had some reflectivity. So I went with white ĺetters. But it bothers me. The unpainted was subtle. Then again, people like it. So there's that

That is a good picture. On the far left is one of the later trucks - 4WD. The tailgate appears to have a painted "JEEP" centered with the "4WD" in the lower right. I can't tell if the "JEEP" is stamped as well as painted.

AND LOOK! Bob Jarvis had the courage to park a Mugly Other FC-150 out front with the other trucks, Jeeps and wagons. That might have scared people away.

    Good topic!

To answer the question, in a round about way, no. Willys didn't typically paint the embossed lettering until the '50s. That doesn't mean that the dealer didn't spruce up the details for further brand identification. This has been a debate as shown in the link, on other forums.

The black on the orange looks really good TJ! I look forward to seeing it up close in August!

I book marked this CJ3B site and think it is a pretty good guide for restoration details but I will yield to rule 2 and the experts.
