Thread: Front hubs question

    Front hubs question

Attached is a photo of one of the front hubs on my 51 currently undergoing a dismantling/rebuild. It looks like the rear where that cap looks like it will just pop off...like the back one did. I’ve tried lots of penetrating oil and heat. Now I’m dumbfounded because I cannot find pictures or videos of a tear down of this that starts at the beginning. Even the Kaiser Willys diagram does not show the “cap”. I’m starting to wonder if a take apart of the front starts with the bolts shown and not removal of the cap.
    Please advise.....Tom

Remove the cap and there is a snap ring on the end of the axle.

The cap comes off just like the rear axle, a pair of channel locks works well but you may dent it up a little if it’s stuck on good.

Okay, so I finally got serious with some heat and got those covers off. This is what I found. I hope this is normal. Drivers side the axle poking out a bit, passenger side, no axle visible at all. When I see two different things, I have to question it before moving forward.pics attached.

It looks to me like someone robbed the axle out of the passenger side.

Hopefully it came out in one piece, or all the pieces were removed. At this point, it would be wise to pull the differential cover to inspect the gear to ensure that there isn't an axle stub stuck in the gear.

Toms51 let me check my pile of parts I may have a rzeppa short side shaft that will fit yours. I replaced mine with a axle with u-joint shaft instead of the stock rzeppa with the ball bearings that came in them.
I will get back to you if its available
