    Merits of the T90 transmission???

This seems to be a well regarded piece of kit on your jeep. I expect someone can tell me what makes it superior.

Not quite sure what you are asking. The Borg Warner T90 transmission was used from 1946 to 1971. There is a large volume of them in the world. Consequently there is a lot of parts. It is a relatively small, strong transmission. It has been used behind 4cyl flat heads as well as small V8's.

As bmorgil stated, it's compact size, and it has enough strength to handle all of your common engine choices for upgrade. The only common problem seen with the T90 is that it pops out of 2nd gear when decelerating. This is caused by the synchronizer being worn.

Thanks bmorgil et al. If this was an upgrade what were the failings of whatever gearbox/transmission came before it?

I think gmwillys is saying the T90 will accept a lot of different engine combinations or "upgrades".

The prior trans was a T84. It is slightly smaller in torque capacity.
