    Speedometer lights

Just received new speedometer with 5 cluster light sockets and bulbs. ( for '59 CJ5 ) One socket has two wires. Help appreciated regarding what hooks up to that. Thanks all!

Are we talking about a whole cluster (speedometer, fuel and temp gauges, or just the speedometer).

Does the back of your unit look like this?

I think that one is for the oil light. The ones with one wire ground to the housing and are just cluster lights. . On the two wire, the one side goes to hot and the ground goes to the oil sender. If I recall, that is the one I had trouble with keeping snapped in. The metal wouldn't spring and snap in and would bend and stay bent, so be careful with that one.

Thank you. Yes, odd set up for that socket.

Yes, I was shipped the complete speedo with 5 sockets and bulbs including the two-wired one. I'm curious why there were only 5 sockets sent with the unit; because there are a total of 8 openings in back of speedo. Also, when referring to the wiring diagram, it appears that two 2-wired sockets are required.

I am only going to use high beam, oil light, and a light for the cluster for now. It doesn't light up the speedometer very well and I went ahead and bought a dash light to mount above it to light everything. I will probably wire up some turning signals later. Most of those lights only need one wire as the light snaps into the back of the housing and is grounded there. Make sure it is grounded well. The oil light grounds when the oil pressure drops so the light has to be non-grounded and two wire.

White wire from alternator/regulator goes to one side of two-wire bulb, then to ignition switch ( amp light on speedo ). The other two-wire bulb is for oil pressure sensor ( one wire from oil pressure sensor, other to ignition switch. The small rings on the new two-wire sockets can be removed for a better fit in the speedo holes.
