    Metal Art

    Harumph!

At the Civic Center here in Ft. Wayne there is a "sculpture" titled "Helmholtz". It is a civic eyesore and a corporate embarrassment. Several years ago a drunk ran over the curb and hit it. According to the creator it was damaged (I think a rattle can would have fixed it) and it was removed and repaired at a cost of over $100K.

Several blocks down the street they are tearing down an old hospital. If this thing is art, the operators of the big hydraulic shears and the excavators are working as full time sculptors.

BUT - one of the local steel fabricators does have a very nice metal sculpture - I'll have to get a picture of it.

When I was in school - a couple of centuries ago, one of the mechanical engineers had to take an art class. He had to display a drawing or painting as a project. His original idea of using a three view drawing of a piston was disapproved by the professor. SO, he had the three-view drawing transferred to a piece of plexiglass, had it chemically etched and put it on a base with a lamp under it - making an edge lit display.

The professor was really irritated at such a tasteless display, but at the class exhibit an executive from Zollner Piston Corp here in Ft. Wayne bought it for the then unheard of price of $500 ...
