Interested in hearing opinions regarding flat towing one of these Jeeps. On-line research seems to indicate the suggested method is to remove the rear drive shaft and front hubs unlocked. I'm wondering if there's any concerns with the rear? My Jeep has super steep gears, I think they're factory 5.38. Obviously never intended to be traveling at 70- 75- maybe even 80mph on the highway. Just running the scenario through my head, would think the pinion bearing is very vulnerable??? That thing would be turnin like nobody's business at 80mph!

Flat towing is not a problem. There is a discussion or two on the forum about this. The one caution from gmwillys is to be sure your tow rig out weighs what your pulling. I pull both driveshafts or unlock the front hubs and leave the front shaft in. Yes the pinion in the rear will be spinning but, its not under power and will have no trouble with the RPM. If you want to see how its doing a quick shot with an infrared heat gun will show you if it is seeing any type of wear. It wont be, it should be cold unless something is wrong with the bearings.

You are definitely having fun with that Jeep. The top sure does look like it makes all the difference in cold weather. Something about no top in the snow seems like it would make for cold going!

    Great snow wheeling photos!

The only down side to a hard top is the level of noise you get when fully buttoned up. Most tops had insulation to absorb some of the noise, but during the course of time it all deteriorates and is not nearly as effective. Even the full soft top that we have on the YJ is pretty noisy going down the road. It's a whole lot better experience when the three months of cooler weather are over and the top comes off for the warmer months. Even with the windshield plowing through the air, it is much quieter without the top.
