    It looks like you're going to learn a lot more about the innards of that transmission and transfer case than most people want to know. BMorgil (Doc Dana) knows more about that little box than just about anyone, all the tricks and do's and don'ts getting it apart and back together.

    The '48 truck has always had a tendency to hang up on the shift from first to second. It did it for my Dad in 1960 and even after two tries at rebuild during the restoration, it still does. I suspect someone doesn't know what to look for when they look at synchronizers and I can live with it as it is - I just don't go places where I have to speed shift from low to second.

    Keep up the pictures - they're great information!

    I love the capture and quality of the project HDK! Nice pictures indeed!

    The trans has been used no question. Still, I have seen much worse. For sure some one was in there with a tube of silicone. First reverse always takes a beating. As long as there aren't any chunks missing, those gears will work. Second gear does look hurt. The Synchro ring Clutch Collar and Gear probably have seen thier day. If it was spitting out of second gear, the worn clutching teeth on the gear are suspect. Make sure the shift fork pads are in good shape.

    I will know a lot more about the trans and transfer case for sure! All part of the fun with a vintage vehicle! :-)

    Thanks, I enjoy documenting the process and always hope it helps others down the road. I'll be freshening up everything in the trans....hopefully it will be good for many years to come.

    Plugs removed.




    Shift rails have some pitting on them.




    The high intermediate shift fork has some slight wear, enough to catch a finger nail on.




    One of the shift rail indent springs was broken upon removal.

    Starting to disassemble the transfer case. Pulling the E-brake drum




    Rear drive flange has some wear/pitting at the seal interface.




    A bit of oil on the E-brake assy....wonder why it didn't hold very well lol.
