    Bell Housing

    Happy New Year

    1. First time removing and installing motor, Have a 1946 Willya Jeep Truck with L134

    Had motor rebuilt and finally have time to install and get back on the road

    After instalation I noticed there is a bolt hole in bell housing that was not covered on DS just below throttle bracket

    2. Has anyone ever seen the stay cable mounted to bottom of bell housing bout 5 o clock position

    That is for the motor control tether aka "Stay Cable". I don't think it was used on anything but the military versions. It was to control movement of the motor under heavy impact. It goes from the bell housing to the cross member on the Military Jeeps.

    Just for your information; both of my CJs have a cable from the crossmember to the bellhousing. Some civilian jeeps must have had it, maybe some don't? I'm not sure about trucks at all.

    That is interesting 56', I did not think it was used on anything but military vehicles. The story goes, it assisted in keeping the fan out of the radiator during "shipping" and the occasional parachute drop or forward impact. There are some theories that the motor mounts were changed to a more durable design and the cable was eliminated. The Military manual has the only reference I could find to it. The military manual states it is there to control engine movement. There is no reference to it being used in any of the civilian service manuals or parts manuals. I have not seen one on a true civilian vehicle until you mentioned yours 56'.

    From the M38 manual:
    "The engine is prevented from moving forward on the rubber mounting, when a sudden stop is made, by the engine stay cable which is attached to the left side of the flywheel bell housing in the front and to the frame cross member at the rear. The length of the cable is adjustable to provide correct tension through a threaded end mounting. Do not over tighten the cable. It should be adjusted to provide 1/2" up and down movement by thumb pressure.""

    I'm know the '46 Heep has one, but was it original or did I pull it from the military stock?.... That was before yesterday, so I don't remember. I know KW stocks cables for the military Jeeps, but they also have them for 2As through CJ5s. There is a great debate through other forums on who, what, and why they exist, and Bmorgil has hit the nail on the head for the true reason.
