Sounds like your friend may have an M151 MUTT - At first glance, it may appear similar to the M38, but as you have described, it comes equipped with 6 horizontal slats in the grille, along with other distinguishing modifications. Instead of consisting of a steel tub bolted onto a separate steel frame, the M151 utilized a monocoque design, which integrated the box frame rails into the sheet-steel body structure...
