    M38A1 front axel

I am restoring an early 1952 M38A1. I am currently working on the front differential/hubs/brakes.etc. There is a tag attached by one of the bolts that secure the cover plate that has the equivalent of a fraction which I don't know how to replicate on my computer keyboard. 43 (on top) 8 (on bottom) 43/8. Is this significant in identifying the differential, or is it a ratio? Thank you!

Welcome 52'! That is the ratio tag sort of. The 43 is the tooth count for the ring gear, 8 is the tooth count on the pinion. 43/8=5.375 or a 5:38 ratio.
