Post 2a Backfires though carb.. timing?

    Hi all!

I have been working on a new project and its a '46 CJ-2A. Everything has been working well until I tried going up hill. I have tried maxing out the throttle while stationary and this doesn't happen. When I go uphill (or maybe apply enough torque) the engine starts to backfire and lose power. Oddly enough, the choke likes to engage more and more when this is happened. I am diagnosing the problem, but would anyone think it would be a timing or exhaust problem? I am currently checking points today.

Thanks and any help is much appreciated

Since it only misbehaves on hills, I'd guess carburetor. When things tilt, gas slops around into somewhere it shouldn't be - or leaves somewhere it should be. Wanting choke also hints at a fuel problem. Look at gaskets, float, inlet needle valve and seat ... etc.

But, since it's an old Jeep - it's probably the pressure in the left rear tire .

Let us know what you find.
