Then back in the wash cabinet & parts washer once again to remove all leftover traces of lapping compound.

Now to repeat the de-greasing/primer/masking/painting process for the rest of the parts.

I ordered a Shift Tower rebuild kit that comes with the required small parts, except it's for the civilian model and doesn't include the gasket that goes on top of the M38 shift tower (specific to the M38). I used the gasket cutter to cut out a couple gaskets, I'll leave a couple extra in the parts drawer in case they are ever needed in the future.

    And bam.....a gasket.

And installed on the Shift Tower to test the fit.

This is one nice project you are documenting HDK.I am sure it will help many for a long time to come.

On the gasket surfaces, I always pass a 14" Mill File accrost to look for the high spots. A lot of damage occurs on disassembly and cleaning. You have been meticulous. The guy/guy's before you with the passion for silicone, maybe not so much!

The work with the lapping pad will give a surface finish that is probably better that the original finish. And, then you come up with little tricks like the Aviation Permatex on the speedometer bushing. If you're not careful, you will have a Jeep that doesn't leak any oil. How will you know if it has oil in it if it doesn't drip a little?

Then, you turn up with tools I've not seen before like the circular gasket cutter, hot and cold wash cabinets to clean parts and it seems just about every tool you need at your fingertips.

You are quickly getting the reputation of "Wizard".

Thank you for all of the pictures and details.

    Merry Christmas.

Just want you to know, Hodakaguy, that I'm following along and am quite impressed as well as interested in the work you're doing here. Very thorough job and your pictures are great! I'm just about to tear into my transfer case and transmission on my 61, so I'm paying close attention to all your comments and tips. Keep it up, it's looking great!

The guy before me did love his silicone! lol. I'm trying my best to keep the oil in the trans/transfer case where it belongs! :-)
